Sunabeda is a municipal town in Koraput region of Odisha. An industrial town, Sunabeda is home to many many industrial units. The town takes pride in being associated with Indian defence establishments.

Geography of Sunabeda

Sunabeda is positioned at 18.73 degrees in North and 82.83 degrees in the East. Sunabeda is surrounded by lush green vegetation all over the hills. The picturesque view of the town attracts a lot of visitors to this place. The HAL Nursery is a must-visit. A deer park also exists adjacent to the nursery. In the suburbs of Sunabeda there is a museum which houses the factory and developmental history of the town.

Sunabeda enjoys presnce of many industrial units. The city is home to Engine division and Sukhoi division of the aircraft manufacturing company Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). HAL Township
gives shelter to about 6 thousand employees with residential quarters for all the staff and employees working here. Other major establishments of this town are Naval Armament Depot (NAD), State government offices, Sports Authority of India hostel, Central University of Orissa (CUO) and Battalion headquarter of Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA).

According to the census of 2001, the population of the town was 58647. The avg. literacy rate of Sunabeda is 62 percent. Odia is the official language of Sunabeda.

History of Sunabeda

The planned township of Sunabeda was established in 1965. The main purpose to create this township was to provide accommodation for the HAL employees. This township is nestled at a height of approximately one thousand meter from the sea level. Earlier this place was famous as the Old Sunabeda which was taken by a local tribal community. After the Indo-Paki battle in the year 1971, a shelter camp was built for the refugees of Bangladesh which turned into Sunabeda 3, this mainly consists of the Hindu Bengalis.

Culture of Sunabeda

Sunabeda houses several temples in the town where a variety of festivals are celebrated.

Jagannath Temple: This is an ancient temple of Sunabeda where the Rath Yatra takes place every year which terminates at HAL. This is a very essential yearly event of the town.

Maa Banadurga Temple: This temple is located at Shantinagar and it happens to be the oldest temple of this area. Here the tribals rejoice the Chaitra Parba every year. This annual event is one of the oldest yearly events of the total Sunabeda area.

Apart from the above two temples there are several other temples like Hanuman Temple, Satyasaai Temple, Shiva Temple, Tarini Temple, Gayatri Temple, Mangala Temple and Santoshi Maa Temple. There are a number of temples located within the HAL Township as well. All these temples help in the spiritual enhancement of the locals of the Sunabeda town. 
 
The main festivals of the town are Dussehra, Rath Yatra, Maha Shivraatri, Vishwakarma Pooja and a few other festivals as well. 

Transport in Sunabeda

Sunabeda is nestled on the National Hwy 26 which links Bargarh and Raipur. The nearest rail heads to the town are- Damanjodi(12 kms), Koraput(19 kms), Dumuriput(6 kms).  Vishakhapatnam airport is the nearest airport to Sunabeda which is about 188 kms from the town.  The Sunabeda town is well linked with the rest of the Odisha state with efficient road network via innumerable buses. Not only Odisha these buses also connect the town with the close by districts of Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh.   The NH 26 runs over the forests and the beautiful mountains surrounding the town which makes the journey extraordinary and a memorable one.
